About Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg is one of the largest cities in Russia, the administrative center of the vast Sverdlovsk region, covering the north of the Ural Mountains, as well as the outskirts of the West Siberian Plain. Yekaterinburg, leading its history from the beginning of the 18th century, was crowned with the glory of one of the first industrial cities of the Russian Empire and still proudly bears the title of the capital of the Urals. Having somewhat lost its industrial potential over the past decades, this metropolis, nevertheless, remains the most important business and financial center of the region, retaining its character – assertive, self-confident and daring. With unlimited tourist opportunities, Yekaterinburg attracts travelers and business people with magnificent architectural monuments, a rich cultural life, commercial potential and, last but not least, shopping, because the capital of the Urals is ahead of all Russian cities in terms of the number of shopping centers.

Yekaterinburg did not arise spontaneously, like many Ural cities, its foundation was accompanied by careful calculations, and the building was initially subordinated to the dominant – an ironworks. Actually, it became the first exclusively industrial city in the history of Russia. A strict layout with a straight-line arrangement of streets, quarters and squares began to take shape in Yekaterinburg by the beginning of the 19th century, setting the direction for its further development. That is why today the huge city looks quite compact, and even the eclectic development, which has not stopped since the beginning of this century and has mixed together old mansions with skyscrapers and business centers, gives the impression of not chaos, but rather originality.

Yekaterinburg is located on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains, where it is believed to be the natural border between Europe and Asia. In a picturesque area, 17 km from the city, a symbolic stele and an obelisk were installed, at the base of which two stones were laid: one was delivered from Cape Roka – the most extreme point of Europe, the second – from Cape Dezhnev, which ends in the sea at the edge of the Chukotka Peninsula, which is the extreme north-east of Eurasia.

Yekaterinburg stretches 15 km from west to east and 26 km from north to south. The metropolis is divided into two parts, western and eastern, by the Iset River, a tributary of the Tobol. Its right bank is almost flat, the left is slightly elevated, but without significant differences in elevation. Yekaterinburg is surrounded by hills overgrown with coniferous and mixed forests, the highest mountain in the vicinity is Volchikha, its height is 526.3 m.

The climate of Yekaterinburg is characterized as temperate continental, with distinct seasonal differences. The low eastern slopes of the Ural Mountains, where the city is located, are protected from the penetration of air masses from the western part of Russia by higher ridges, and at the same time are open to the invasion of Arctic air. However, air currents from the south – from the Caspian regions and the deserts of Central Asia – freely penetrate here. This feature determines the variability of the Yekaterinburg weather – sharp fluctuations in temperature and anomalous phenomena, when temperature drops are up to 30 ° C during the day.

There are many supermarkets and shopping malls in Yekaterinburg. The most luxurious of them are located in the city center, where the Greenwich mall alone occupies an entire block. There are shops representing world brands, as well as a huge hypermarket. The shopping and entertainment center “Raduga-Park” is also popular with the townspeople, famous not only for the assortment of goods, but also for the luxurious park with a Ferris wheel. Tourists always drop by the pompous shopping center “Passage” on Vayner Street, 9. All large stores have souvenir departments where you can buy items made of Ural gems, elegant malachite boxes, magnets, clothes, dishes with logos of Yekaterinburg attractions, dolls are sold everywhere, popular among foreigners.

The transport infrastructure in Yekaterinburg is well developed. Public transport is represented by buses, trolleybuses, trams, ubiquitous minibuses, metro. Trams and trolleybuses leave the routes at 05:30, buses – at 06:00, they serve passengers until 23:00.

The city metro includes 9 stations, its opening hours: 05: 30-24: 00.

Another type of transport is the city train. One of its lines connects the Yekaterinburg railway station with the airport, the second leads south, to nearby Sysert, and has several stops within the city. The railway station is located near the center of Yekaterinburg. At the station square there are the final stops of a number of bus and trolleybus routes, within walking distance is the Uralskaya metro station.

About University

The Ural State University of Economics is a university that trains the economic elite of Russia and foreign countries. USUE is a basic, multidisciplinary economic university with more than 15,000 students, and their number is constantly growing. The university has trained about 159,000 specialists for various sectors of the national economy, including representatives of the business elite and government bodies.

Currently, the university has 500 teachers, 80 doctors of science, and more than 240 candidates of science, mainly in the field of economics and finance. Among them are teachers with 30-40 years of experience, and young associate professors and professors who successfully combine academic training with excellent knowledge of the practice of modern business. Ural State University of Economics is one of the few universities in the country where almost all heads of departments are doctors of science. Among the teaching staff of USUE, dozens of teachers are holders of patents and registered programs, two professors are the authors of discoveries.

The university has four departments: finance and law, management and informatics, economics, trade, food and service. In addition, the university includes the structures of correspondence, distance, business education and the faculty of leadership technologies.

USUE is one of 5 universities in the country that is introducing a new system of training specialists in computer modeling, designed for 2.5 years of study. The international educational center for computer technologies “Arena Multimedia” dominates here, which provides training in the field of multimedia technologies. USUE-SINKH – the only one in the Urals in 2007 entered the register of German universities, in the highest category H +. This means that the USUE diploma is recognized in this country. We are actively developing international cooperation, agreements have been signed with institutes and universities in Germany, Great Britain, China, Kazakhstan, India, Czech Republic, Korea, USA and others. Our students are trained in these countries, we, in turn, accept their youth. Close mutually beneficial contacts have been established among the teaching staff.

Ural State Economic University became one of the initiators and organizers of the I Eurasian Economic Forum of Youth, which brought together about 1200 students, young people, scientists and teachers from 48 countries of the world – representatives of developed, thinking youth.

International Relations

USUE is one of the most active universities of the Urals in the development of international relations.

During its existence, the University signed 120 agreements on international cooperation in 56 countries of the world (Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, Guatemala, Paraguay, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria, Congo, Egypt, Iraq, and others), including agreements on development of double degree program in four areas of bachelor’s degree and two areas of master’s degree courses at six universities.

Ural State University of Economics is the only university in the Urals which ranking in German listing for educational institutions 2007 was the highest (H+) that means public recognition of USUE diplomas in Europe.

Currently the University established stable contacts with the US Embassy in Russia, the US Consulate General in Yekaterinburg, the German Academic Exchange Service and representative offices of other organizations. There have been signed inter-university agreements with educational institutions of 56 countries, including the universities of Kazakhstan, Germany, Great Britain, China, and South Korea.

Twenty-three professors from Great Britain, France, Germany, USA, Czech Republic, China, Ecuador, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, and other countries were awarded the title of USUE Honorary Professor.

The University has the Faculty of Pre-university Training that offers courses of the Russian language for foreign students and implements programs of students’ adaptation. More than 200 foreign students, master’s degree, postgraduates and doctoral students are studying at USUE.

Preparatory department

The preparatory department for foreign citizens of the International Cooperation Department was established on the basis of the decision of the Academic Council of the URGEU of December 26, 2014.

The department organizes pre-university training of foreign citizens on additional educational programs in Russian for training at the Ural State Economic University or other higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation.

There are three fields of preparatory department: Economics, Technical and Medical.

In accordance with the goals set for the organization of the educational process at the faculty, the following tasks are solved:

• Formation of language competence;
• Formation of communicative and speech competence in reading, listening, writing, speaking;
• Training of the language of the specialty on the chosen profile;
• Training in general education subjects in accordance with the chosen profile;
• Adaptation of foreign citizens in a new social, linguistic and cultural environment;

Hostels

At the moment USUE provides foreign students with placement in 3 hostels within the borders of Ekaterinburg.  International cooperation department automatically books places at the hostel for all students approved for study at USUE.

In each room we usually place 2-3 students.

The rooms have all the necessary furniture for a comfortable stay of students: beds, tables, wardrobes, etc. Kitchen, laundry room, shower and toilet are available on every floor of the hostel. It also has gym and canteen.

Student Organizations

Student life is a bright time full of adventures and new friendships.

Your communication and networking are not limited by the study group or hostel neighborhood, depending on your institute, interests or hobby you can find group of students or community that might fit your interests.

Two creative organizations are available for students Open Studio Theater (O.S.T.) and Cheer-Dance-Show “Reactive”.

Open Studio Theater (O.S.T.)

The name determines the characteristics of the theater. “Open” means that we are open to new people, ideas, and experiments. “Studio” means that our theater regularly conducts classes in acting and scenic speech. “Theater” means that we show plays, performances, sketches on the stage of the Recreation Center and other venues of the city, visit theatrical festivals and go on tours. For 13 years of existence, O.S.T. is a multiple winner of Russian and international festivals. In the repertoire of the theater, there are such well-known performances as “Rezo”, “Marina Tsvetaeva. Things that passed”, “Faryatyev’s Fantasy”, “We”, “Match Factory”, “Alisa”, “Ala-ad-Din”, and others. An actor in our theater is more than just an actor: he or she is an artist, a property master, an assembler, a director, a composer, a playwright, and even a little philosopher. Generally speaking, everyone is doing whatever he can! Come to us, if you wish to unlock creativity and imagination!

Cheer-Dance-Show “Reactive”

In Russia, cheerleading exists since 1996 and now is an official sport.

At USUE a cheerleading team appeared 6 years ago. The team “ReActive” participated in many cheerleading competitions in the categories “cheer-mix”, “group stunts mix”, “partner stunts” and has a number of awards.

Since 2012, the team is coached by Ksenia Levina (a participant of the support group “Bagira” in Moscow, a three-time champion of Russia in cheerleading).

In September 2013, a new team of the cheer-dance-show was gathered, which today consists of girls and is called “Reactive Girls”. The team already participates in various competitions and takes an active part in the events of the city and the region. They are invited to grace with enchanting and incendiary numbers sporting events in Yekaterinburg, Pervouralsk, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and then some! We work with many well-known companies: Ural Airlines, Coca-Cola, hockey club Avtomobilist.

In 2014, the team won the title “Champions of the Urals and Siberia” in the category of cheer-dance-show at the competitions in sports cheerleading, which was a great incentive to win in the future!

Sports

USUE is actively positioned as a center for international sports events. We would like to remind that the University won the All-Russian competition of the Association of Student Sports Clubs of Russia (ASSC of Russia) and received a certificate for the construction of an open-air ground “Studzachet ASSC of Russia.” In addition, the University will build a multifunctional stadium next to the hostel in Umeltsev Street.

Among USUE students there are athletes who have achieved high results in competitions of various levels in volleyball, basketball, speed skating, rock climbing, sports tourism, checkers, powerlifting, table tennis, and badminton. Annually in the framework of the Eurasian Economic Youth Forum, major sports competitions are held, mainly in national sports.
