FACULTY OF MEDICINE
The history of the medical faculty dates back to 1920 when it was the medical faculty of Smolensk University. In 1930, based on the medical faculty, which already had an established scientific and methodological base, the Smolensk State Medical Institute was organized, which in 1994 received the status of a medical academy (SSMA).
The medical faculty of the SSMA provides basic training for graduates of a wide profile for work in medical institutions of the Russian Federation. It is the largest in the academy and trains doctors who work in more than 40 medical specialties. About 1200 students from various regions of Russia and neighboring countries study at the faculty, but mostly they are residents of the Smolensk, Bryansk, Oryol, Pskov, Kaluga, Kaliningrad, and Tula regions.
FACULTY OF DENTISTRY
Since its inception, the faculty has graduated more than 5,000 dentists who work in various regions of the Russian Federation, as well as countries near and far abroad. Diplomas of graduates of the Faculty of Dentistry were received by more than 50 citizens of foreign countries. Many graduates of the faculty have become major organizers of practical healthcare, chief physicians of city and regional dental clinics, and private clinics in Smolensk, Kaluga, Bryansk, Kaliningrad regions, Moscow, St. Petersburg, other regions of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
The educational process at the departments is inextricably linked with the medical, diagnostic, and advisory work of faculty members in the city of Smolensk and the region. Employees regularly make presentations at inter-district meetings of dentists, and meetings of the Association of Dentists of the Smolensk Region. A number of teachers of the faculty are consultants of leading foreign dental firms, actively participate in domestic and international conferences of dentists, and conduct seminars and master classes. Employees of specialized departments are the authors of textbooks and teaching aids issued under the heading of UMO, and holders of RF patents for inventions.
FACULTY OF PHARMACY
The high demand for graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy proves that the Faculty of Pharmacy is efficient and competitive. Today, the faculty conducts training in the specialty “Pharmacy” for work in pharmaceutical organizations, in the field of production, storage, and sale of medicines. Domestic and Western pharmaceutical companies that are actively developing their business in Russia need pharmacists to work in marketing, certification, and registration departments, as well as medical representatives and heads of pharmaceutical organizations. Graduates of the faculty acquire skills in the development, testing, and registration of medicines, their production, and quality control. Starting from the third year, students begin to study the disciplines of the specialty: pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, management and economics of pharmacy, pharmacognosy, medical and pharmaceutical commodity science, etc.
Under the guidance of experienced professionals, students master all types of pharmaceutical activities. In practice, in botany and pharmacognosy, future pharmacists study medicinal plants, and get acquainted with their cultivation, and the rules for harvesting and drying medicinal plant materials. Students of the Faculty of Pharmacy have educational and industrial practice in pharmacy organizations and pharmaceutical enterprises of the Smolensk, Kaluga, Bryansk, and Kaliningrad regions, and other regions of Russia and beyond.

It was founded in 1933 at the Smolensk Medical Institute based on the educational funds of the departments and the collection of medicine, transferred by the fundamental library of the Smolensk Pedagogical Institute. Initially, the collection of books and journals on medicine consisted of about 13 thousand copies. The collections of the local infirmary for doctors, the library of the sanitary department of the Smolensk provincial government, and the Zemstvo medical library became the basis of the medical institute library fund.
