ABOUT MOSCOW

Moscow was founded more than 800 years ago by Yuri Dolgoruki. Moscow is located in the central part of the East European Plain. It spreads out on the banks of the Moskva River. In the territories of remote areas of the city, beautiful forests have been preserved, where you can enjoy the native Russian nature. Moscow is located on a plain, with an average height of 156 m.

It is the main political, economic and cultural centre of Russia. Moscow is a city of highly developed industry. It has numerous modern enterprises, mostly engineering and metalworking plants. They produce machine tools, motor cars, transformers, electric motors, TV sets, watches, etc. Moscow is also a centre of the chemical industry. Moscow is called a city of students. There are a large number of schools, gymnasiums, museums, colleges, institutes and universities in the city. Moscow is a very beautiful city with huge green parks, large squares and wide streets, making it a very attractive city for everyone.

The climate of Moscow is moderately continental with distinct seasons. Summer is usually relatively warm here. Winters are fairly cool with frequent thaws. Autumn in Moscow is cool and rainy. Spring is characterized by changeable weather, when warm days are interspersed with rather cold ones.

Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University is one of the oldest and leading universities in Russia and it is well known all over the world. It is located in the biggest city of Russia – Moscow.

Since 1906 our University has been training highly qualified doctors and scientists.

The university is the first in the world to establish the first Paediatric faculty in 1930 which served as а model for creation of such faculties in other universities all over the world. The world’s first faculty of Biomedicine opened in Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University in 1964.

Today Pirogov Medical University is a large scientific-educational and medical centre, which includes more than 120 departments and laboratories. On the basis of the University, active work is being done to develop and implement modern technologies of teaching and healing, expansion of international cooperation, research and medical activities. A unique combination of glorious traditions and innovative development makes our University one of the leading institutions of Russia in the field of medical education.

The University provides training to medical investigators in medical spheres of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Cybernetics. The faculty graduates work not only in Russia, but also in numerous countries of the world, including countries of the European Union and the United States of America.

There are graduate and postgraduate programs for study: General medicine, Paediatrics, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Biophysics, Medical Cybernetics, Clinical Psychology, Social work, Dentistry and Pharmacy. After acquiring basic education, students can continue education by engaging in clinical residency and postgraduate studies.

The University established network of the biggest Moscow state clinical hospitals which service hundreds of thousands of people with various pathologies. Students have а unique opportunity to acquire hands on knowledge of how real patients are diagnosed, treated, operated and how they recover. The clinical base of Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University consists of five main hospitals. They are City Clinical Hospital №17, Perinatal Medical Centre ‘Mother & Child’, Family Planning & Reproduction Centre, City Clinical Hospital №31, Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital.

ABOUT FACULTIES

Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University has 7 faculties. They are Therapeutic, Paediatric, Medicobiologic, International, Dentists’, Pharmaceutical and Psychologico-social faculties.

Therapeutic faculty (Departments of faculty Surgery №2, of Internal Medicine, Propaedeutic and Beam diagnostics, Pathophysiology and Clinical pathophysiology). It is the largest university faculty. 4630 students of the university are specialised in Clinical Therapy. As in previous years, different departments of the faculty are extensively connected with the institutions in Moscow for health treatment in practice, such as: big state clinical hospitals, maternity hospitals, outpatient-polyclinic establishments that form the clinical basis. The university trains highly qualified physicians in major spheres of medical activity: Therapists, Surgeons, Obstetricians-Gynaecologists and others. The faculty consists of 40 departments that provide Graduates with quality inputs in general theories, medico biological and clinical training.

Paediatric faculty (Departments of Biology, Hygiene, Microbiology and Virology, Physical culture). In 1930, unique to the world, and to Russia – Maternity, Baby-hood and children’s treatment faculty was opened. The Faculty is the pride of the university. From the very first day of the formation of the faculty, future Paediatricians were trained according to high school regulations and the demands of practical health treatment. Departments of the Paediatric faculty are integrally connected with Moscow Health Service establishment and possesses more than 10000 beds in the hospital.

Medicobiologic faculty. In 1963 in ‘Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University’ the Medicobiologic faculty for Medicobiologics (MBF) was formed for the first time ever in the world. Opening of such a unique faculty in Russia was conditioned by the necessity of training scientific manpower for further work in the sphere of medical research and later on, the specialists for implementing modern medico biological achievements into medical practice, development of innovative technologies, modern physical, physical-chemical and mathematical diagnostics and methods of treatment. Graduates of the above-mentioned majors can perform the following professional activities: 1. Scientific; 2. Teaching; 3. Medical.

International faculty (Departments of Humanities, UNESCO Network Chair of Bioethics and International Medical Law). ‘Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University’ is the first International University in Russia. International Medical School is open to new strategic partnerships and actively pursues international activities at all levels. The international activities of PRNRMU are broad and varied. Possible areas for cooperation include, but not limited to – double degrees (Medical care, Pharmacology, Clinical Psychology, Biomedical specialties), student and PhD student exchange, summer internships abroad & research collaboration.

Dentists’ faculty. ‘Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University’ started the courses for studies at the Dentists’ faculty in 2008. In order to contribute to successful training in the new spheres in the faculty a series of initiatives were undertaken, like- forming of new department, enrolling qualified specialists by the University in the corresponding disciplines necessary for future professions, purchasing of modern equipment required for Pedagogic procedures, enlarging the library stock.

Pharmaceutical faculty. Pharmaceutical education is unique as it combines the knowledge of Chemical, Biomedical and Pharmaceutical science, Pharmaceutical business and Pharmacy organization, Management and Marketing, Pharmaceutical services and Production management, Psychology and Pedagogics, Pharmaceutical ethics and Deontology. Currently, 47 subjects are taught in 22 departments of the University & the elective courses are provided as well. A Graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy knows everything about the drugs: Synthesis, development, pharmacological activity, storage and quality control.

Psychologico-Social faculty. It was formed in 2001 in accordance with the growing demands of health treatment and improvements in medical help system, that considered not only the basis of biological health. but also treating a human being as a complex multipolar system with inner psychology within social relationships. At present, there are two departments of the faculty where studies are being held: clinical psychology and social work. There are 217 students studying at the faculty. Fundamental theoretical training connected with vast sphere for practice, over 80 clinical bases of the university encourage the graduates to become highly qualified specialists, who are able to have fulfilling careers, working at big clinics or in private practice.

LIBRARY

Currently, the assets of the library comprise of over 750 thousand items. Various library attendants were issued 1061586 books this year itself. Over the last 15 years, the Department of newest library technologies has been formed with two bibliographical databases – Medicine and Dentistry, which contain information since 1989. This year it is intended to increase computing stock up to 80-100 items to provide the attendants with better information service.

STUDENTS LIFE

Sport

On the territory of the complex there is an organized beach, a gym, sports playgrounds for playing football, basketball, volleyball, tennis. Each student can play sports to their liking in this complex, as well as join the competition.

Students can always choose a sports team to their liking: hockey club, volleyball, mini-football, basketball, sambo, chess club, swimming, badminton.

Teams of Pirogov Medical University regularly participate in competitions of the Moscow student league, Sports festivals of students of medical and pharmaceutical universities of Russia and other all-Russian and inter-university

sports festivals.

ABOUT ACCOMMODATION

Hostels at Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University are newly renovated and furnished. Hostels have all facilities (Wi-Fi, kitchens, bathrooms, washing-rooms, laundry-rooms, etc.) with a good living environment. The students of Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University are provided with 2–3-seater rooms. Every student gets a bed, a mattress, a pillow, a blanket, a desk, chairs and lighting. The hostels are well heated centrally and provided security.
