Kuzbass State technical University named after T.F.Gorbachev

History

The history of the Kuzbass State Technical University is closely connected with the history of the industrial development of the region. The order to create the Kemerovo Mining Institute was signed on September 9, 1950 – this day is considered the birthday of the university. At that time, the coal industry of Kuzbass was actively developing and reaching a new level. At the same time, there was a distinct lack of qualified engineers.

On November 1, 1950, 256 first-year students of the new university began their studies. Training was carried out in three specialties: “Development of mineral deposits”, “Construction of mining enterprises” and “Mining electromechanics”.

Timofey Fedorovich Gorbachev, an outstanding engineer, scientist, organizer of coal industry enterprises, Hero of Socialist Labor, became the first director of the KGI. The university has been named after him since 2011.

In 1965, the Kemerovo Mining Institute was renamed the Kuzbass Polytechnic Institute, and in 1993 it was transformed into the Kuzbass State Technical University.

Over the past decades, the university has evolved from a mining institute into a comprehensive educational and research center. Today, KuzSTU continues the main line – it conducts scientific and educational work in accordance with the economic goals and objectives that Kuzbass sets for itself.

About University

Kuzbass State Technical University named after T. F. Gorbachev – the flagship in the training of highly qualified engineering personnel and the implementation of scientific innovations for the industrial sector of the region and the country – has a rich history, inextricably linked with the development and formation of Kuzbass.

It was opened on September 9, 1950 by order of the Minister of Higher Education of the USSR on the basis of the Kemerovo Mining and Construction College.

Over the years of the existence of the university, more than 100 thousand specialists have been trained, which form the basis of the engineering corps of the most important sectors of the economy of the region and the country.

Today Kuzbass Polytechnic University is:

• 7 scientific and educational institutes: mining, energy, chemical and oil and gas technologies, construction, information technology and mechanical engineering, economics and management, vocational education.
• Institutes: continuing education, e-learning, industrial and environmental safety, as well as the faculty of fundamental training.
• Center for Children’s Scientific and Engineering Creativity “UnikUm”.
• 4 branches in the cities: Prokopyevsk, Mezhdurechensk, Belovo, Novokuznetsk
• Over 11,000 students from 11 countries.
• 58 bachelor’s and specialist’s programs, over 40 master’s and postgraduate programs, 135 areas of additional professional education.
• 17 main scientific areas, including: mining machines; geomechanics, destruction of rocks by explosion, mine aerodynamics and mining thermal physics; electrotechnical complexes and systems; open and underground geotechnology; thermophysics and theoretical heat engineering; mineral processing; chemistry and technology of fuels and special products and others.
• 6 scientific schools.
• More than 1000 contracts with partners for practice and employment of graduates.
• One of the best student campuses in the country, uniting 9 educational buildings, 3 dormitories, the hotel complex “Polytech” in the international ski resort “Sheregesh”, the recreation center “Written Rocks”, a mountain equipment park, a ski base, a sanatorium-dispensary, a food factory and much more.

Hostel

The KuzSTU campus is located in the city center, 15 minutes from the educational buildings and includes 3 comfortable hostels with rooms with their own bathroom and shower, playgrounds, a multifunctional center with social, recreational and cultural facilities and much more.

The room can accommodate 2-4 people at the same time. They provide all the necessary furniture for a comfortable stay: beds, tables, chairs, wardrobes, bookcases, etc.

On the floors of the hostel there are common areas – modern study rooms, psychologists’ offices, co-working areas, conference rooms, kitchens and laundries.
