Izhevsk State Medical Institute was founded in 1933.  In the first academic year the Izhevsk State Medical Institute has accepted 171 students. This higher educational establishment is located in Izhevsk city – the capital of the Udmurt Republic. The city is situated along the Izh River in the Western Urals. It is political, economic, cultural and educational center of the Volga Region.

In 1934, in Izhevsk State Medical Institute were established the Departments of Histology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Biochemistry, General Hygiene, Normal Physiology.

In 1935 the following Departments were organized: Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy, General Surgery, Pathological Physiology, Social Sciences, Microbiology, Pathological Anatomy, Pharmacology, Physical Education. In two years, some more departments were created: Hospital Surgery, Eye Diseases, Childhood Diseases, Nervous Diseases, Forensic Medicine, Hospital Therapy, Skin and Venereal Diseases, Diseases of the Ear, Nose and Throat, Infectious Diseases, Psychiatry. In three years, the Department of Social Hygiene and Foreign Languages was founded.

In 1944, the Department of Military Medical Training was opened.

In 1975, Pediatric Faculty was created. Another important event in the history of the Institute has happened in five years, there has been established the Faculty of Dentistry.

Izhevsk State Medical Institute has started training international students since 1988. Students from 113 states of the former Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa have obtained education at Izhevsk State Medical Academy. Over this period of time, around 3000 physicians, dentists and have been trained for foreign countries. Former students of Izhevsk State Medical Institute are well-known for strong educational and practical background. That is why, Izhevsk State Medical Institute has brilliant reputation in the Russian Federation and in foreign countries. Izhevsk State Medical Institute closely collaborates with national and foreign educational establishments. A lot of work has been done to organize international exchanges for students and young doctors.

In 1991, Izhevsk State Medical Institute gained the status of the Academy. What is more, this year was established the department, responsible for monitoring postgraduate medical education. The department coordinates and controls of the teaching and learning process in the following directions: Internship, Clinical Residency and Ph.D. degree program.

Teaching staff of the Academy consists of 351 lecturers including 86 Doctors of Medicine and 212 Candidates of Medicine. There are 52 departments at the Academy. Students are offered to have practice at 28 clinical bases. Since the date of the establishment till the present moment, more than 21,500 doctors and nursing managers have been trained by Izhevsk State Medical Academy. Currently, 2100 students are studying in Izhevsk State Medical Academy.

Accommodation:

Students are offered twin – and triple- rooms. All the rooms are comfortable and well-heated. The rooms are provided with the Internet access, TV set and telephone.  Facilities for students are organized on the sharing basis, these are: bathrooms and kitchens. All the students’ hostels are under protection of the police. Hostels are very closely situated to the University, it takes some minutes to get there on foot.
