Buryat State University was founded in 1932 as Buryat State Teacher Training Insitute named after D. Banzarov. Buryat State University is located in Ulan-Ude, in 130 km distance from the Lake Baikal. In 1995, Buryat State University was established on the basis of Buryat State Pedagogical Institute and the Buryat Branch of Novosibirsk State University. It is one of the oldest Universities in Siberia. The establisher of Buryat State University is the Ministry of Education and Science.

Medical faculty in Buryat State University was established in 1999. At this Faculty has been opened the first department, which specializes in the field of Tibetan Medicine.

Buryat State University has brilliant academic staff: there are 180 professors holding the degree “Doctor of Science”, 575 professors and associate professors with the degree “Candidate of Science” (PhD). What is more, there are 6 Corresponding Fellows of Russian State Academies, more than 30 professors with the title “Academician”, “Corresponding Fellow” of public academies of the Russian Federation.

Buryat State University very closely collaborates in various fields with the leading Universities of the Russian Federation and wide range of international organizations. The University actively takes part in various programs, such as exchange of students and teachers. International seminars and conferences are conducted at Buryat State University.

Currently, at Buryat State University study more than 10000 students. More than 55,000 highly qualified specialists have already graduated from the University. Buryat State University offers postgraduate education in 42 disciplines for the “Candidate of Science” degree and in 4 disciplines for the “Doctor of science” degree, medical internship in 15 specialization fields, and medical residency training – in 4 fields. The University has 11 Dissertation Councils for 19 academic disciplines.

Academic stuff consists of 1 100 teachers, 575 Candidates of Sciences and Associate Professors.

The University has its own academic infrastructure, including research library and center of the information systems. Buryat State University has the biggest scientific resources.

Accommodation:

The University has 5 hostels for students. Students are offered twin – and triple- rooms. Facilities for students are organized on sharing basis, these are bathrooms and kitchens. Hostels are very closely situated to the University, it takes some minutes to get there by foot.
