    History

    The history of the university begins in 1872. 1872-1874 on the first company of the Izmailovsky regiment, the building of the Tsesarevich Nikolai vocational school was built, which is now the main building of the university. The school was founded in 1875 to train master locksmiths for industry. The school was created on the basis of the House of Charity and Craft Education and was its successor, the school was intended for the vocational education of children mainly from poor families. The name of Tsarevich Nicholas was given to the school in memory of the deceased eldest son of Emperor Alexander II. The first director from 1875 to 1880 was N. F. Labzin. Since March 1897, the director was Valentin Mikhailovich Arbuzov. The school served as the basis for the creation of the St. Petersburg State Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics and Voenmekh.

    On May 30, 1917, the Provisional Government adopted a Decree on the transformation from October 1, 1917 of the Tsesarevich Nikolai Vocational School into the “Governmental Petrograd Technical School”. It was also decided to establish a preparatory school at the school. On July 1, 1918, the school was renamed the First Petrograd Technical School, and on July 23, 1921 it was renamed the First Petrograd Mechanical College, which existed until June 1930. At this time, the secondary specialized educational institution is engaged in the retraining of skilled workers in order to obtain higher qualifications. The main areas of activity begin to take shape: mechanics and heat engineering. The university is organized as a higher educational institution “Mechanical Institute” by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Economic Council of the USSR dated June 13, 1930 No. 14 as part of the Leningrad Mechanical Training Plant.

    On February 26, 1932, in accordance with order No. 100 of the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry of the USSR, the university was transformed into the Military Mechanical Institute of the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry of the USSR. It consisted of two faculties – artillery and ammunition. Since 1934, the Faculty of Naval Weapons has been opened.

    In March 1945 the institute resumed its activities in Leningrad.

    In 1946, the Institute was transferred from the Ministry of Armaments of the USSR to the Ministry of Education of the USSR.

    December 29, 1961 – LMI was awarded the Medal of the USSR Academy of Sciences in honor of the launch of the first artificial Earth satellite. Thus, the Institute’s contribution to the development of rocket and space technology, space exploration and training of personnel for the relevant industries was noted.

    December 7, 1992 – the institute was renamed the Baltic State Technical University named after D. F. Ustinov.

    In 1992, the institute was transformed into a state technical university, has state attestation and accreditation. By order of the Ministry of General and Vocational Education of the Russian Federation dated September 11, 1997 No. 1868, the Baltic State Technical University named after D. F. Ustinov was renamed the Baltic State Technical University “Voenmekh” named after D. F. Ustinov.

    About University

    Voenmekh is now fully formed as a technical university that trains specialists in integrated security issues, in particular, defense, information, environmental security, security in the framework of geopolitical problems and other areas of activity. The basis of the university are high-tech and highly scientific defense-technical specialties. Today, more than 50% of students study in those areas that the President of the country noted in the list of promising areas for the development of science and technology. About 60% of Voenmech’s specialties are included in the list of specialties that require particularly sophisticated equipment.

    The range of solutions used at our university in the field of advanced training methods is quite wide. Some of the most important ones can be identified among them. Firstly, this is the creation of industry-specific scientific and educational laboratories with the participation of enterprises and with the involvement of specialists from enterprises. Secondly, the development and implementation of educational programs that enable senior students to combine their studies with work at specialized enterprises, while gaining special knowledge, skills and abilities directly at their future workplace. On the basis of the center of additional professional education opened at the university, retraining and advanced training of specialists from specialized enterprises is carried out in 50 programs. Finally, thirdly, this is undoubtedly a well-organized educational research work of students. The University has a Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of Students (TSNTTS) and a Student Design Bureau. In their activities, they are integrated into the scientific student community of Russia’s leading aerospace universities.

    An indicator of the quality of this work is the All-Russian Youth Scientific and Technical Conference “Youth, Technology, Space”, which is held annually in Voenmekh and which gathers up to two hundred or more delegates from specialized enterprises and universities in Russia and neighboring countries. Numerous plenary and breakout sessions, meetings with cosmonauts and famous scientists and designers, lectures for the growing scientific shift are held within the framework of the conference. And the competition of scientific works of young participants, and the mandatory publication of the best reports.

    Voenmekh is a compact elite university that provides both the training of engineering personnel in the field of defense technologies and the high-tech sector of the economy, focused on advanced education (5-7 years ahead), and the training of elite engineers, focused on the equipment and technology of the near future, and well prepared to work in today’s environment.

    Hostels

    The university offers three hostels. The rooms are designed to accommodate 2-4 people.

    There are everything you need for comfortable living: beds, tables, chairs, wardrobes, bed linens, blankets, pillows, etc.

    For general use in the hostel there are kitchens, a bathroom, shower rooms (separately for boys and girls), a study room, and a laundry room. Students also have the opportunity to play sports in the gym with exercise equipment, as well as hold events in the assembly hall.
